



Four field trips are planned for Wednesday, July 2. Vans and buses will
depart from the front door of McMahon Residence Hall. All trips have minimum
and maximum participation limits, so participants are urged to make reservations
in advance by checking the appropriate boxes on the registration form,
and paying fees by the pre-registration deadline. In case a field trip
is cancelled, a full refund will be given.
- Explorations of stream- and pond-breeding amphibians in the blast
zone at
Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument: An opportunity
to see a variety of salamanders, frogs and toads in one of the most fascinating
landscapes found anywhere in the Pacific Northwest.
Led by Charlie Crisafulli,
who has been studying recovery of amphibian populations since the 1981
volcanic eruption. Cost is $20 per person. Lunch will be provided.
- Wine tasting tour of
Ste.
Michelle Winery,
Woodinville, WA:
Sample a wide variety of Washington state wines and enjoy the hospitality
and beautiful grounds of Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville, WA, about
25 minutes northeast of Seattle. Cost is $15 per person. Lunch will be
provided.
- Olympic mudminnow expedition: Retrace the steps of
Leonard P.
Schultz in 1929 to the type locality of Novumbra hubbsi on Washington
state's
Olympic Peninsula; catch-and-release,
and observe the mudminnow in its
natural environment. Cost is $20 per person. Lunch will be provided.
- Exploration of the amphibians and reptiles of Snoqualmie Pass-Ellensburg:
Led by Herb Brown and Bill Leonard,
the trip will begin in shrub-steppe
habitats near Ellensburg, WA,
where the group will search for short-horned
lizards and other reptiles of the area. From there we will slowly make
our way back toward Seattle, stopping in Ponderosa pine forests to search
for sharptail snakes, rubber boas and garter snakes. Then on to the summit
of Snoqualmie Pass to view Pacific giant salamanders, tailed frogs and
Cascade frogs. Cost is $20 per person. Lunch will be provided.
